Welcome to the Owyhee County Historic Preservation Commission

We are dedicated to preserving Owyhee County’s heritage. Our purpose is to preserve significant historic structures and sites within Owyhee County by identifying and documenting those structures and sites of historic value, reviewing development applications that might impact an identified historic structure or site, and educating the public on preserving historic structures and sites through education and outreach activities. The Commission also overseas the Silver City Historic District to ensure Silver City retains its historic fabric.

Meet the Commission

The Commission is appointed by the Board of Owyhee County Commissioners and charged with preserving Owyhee County’s heritage, mainly by educating property owners and the general
public of the economic and intrinsic value of preserving historic sites and structures. The Council is made up of a group of dedicated volunteers seeking to preserve the counties great history!

Owyhee County is a Certified Local Government under the National Historic Preservation Act., which makes the commission eligible for a limited amount of National Park Service grant funds. These grant funds are required to be matched with County and/or private funds. The Commission has authority to conduct surveys of local historic properties, cooperate with outside agencies toward historic preservation objectives, make recommendations and participate in local planning processes, and promote awareness of the importance of historic preservation through education and outreach.

Meetings

The Owyhee County Historic Preservation Commission regular meeting time is 6pm on the second Thursday from January till November. Meetings are held at the Owyhee County Museum
at 17085 Basey St. Murphy, ID 83650. Applications need to be submitted to the commission at least ten days prior to the meeting.
