SUMMARY:Bruneau Petrified Wood: Geologic Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Sign up for this geologic field trip to Bruneau Petrified Wood and collect petrified wood and other fossils without digging!\nExplore the geology of the amazing Bruneau Petrified Wood area near Bruneau\, Owyhee County with your guide Tom Frey. You will be able to collect petrified wood and other fossils without digging. This trip is good for ages 7+\, but will require walking on uneven ground and rocks for ½ mile or less. \nLet’s meet in the Albertson’s Shopping Center parking lot near McDonald’s Restaurant\, 6574 S Federal Way at 9:45 am for a 10 am departure. Bring a rock hammer if you can. \nSponsored by Idaho Museum of Mining and Geology (IMMG)\, 2455 Old Penitentiary Rd. Non-members of the Museum $20 plus Eventbrite fee; IMMG Members and Children are FREE. \nFull refunds if the IMMG cancels the trip because of the weather. Be sure to submit a functioning email when you register\, and check it the day before in case the trip is canceled. \nNOTE: This will be a one-stop field trip\, but Bruneau Dunes State Park is very nearby and could make a good 2nd stop for those wanting to go explore this geologic wonder. An Idaho State Park Pass or entrance fee is required. \nPlease contact operations@idahomuseum.org if you have questions. \n——————————– \nAbout your Guide: Tom Frey has always had a love for geology and geography. He had a minor in geography in college and has a special interest in the geology and mineralogy of Idaho. Tom has led school tours at the Idaho Museum of Mining and Geology for five years and more recently became a docent in the museum. He has a broad background in adult education both in developing and presenting materials. \nThis adventure requires a waiver. SUMMARY:Shoofly Sand Pit (Fossils): Geologic Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:This is a new field trip to a sand pit near Shoofly\, Owyhee County that contains small fossils and petrified wood from ancient Lake Idaho. \nJoin Steve Schaps for a brand-new geologic field trip to the Shoofly Sand Pit\, located about 70 miles from Boise. The sand pit contains abundant small fossils from Lake Idaho deposits\, petrified wood and odd sandstone sculptures that you collect off the surface just by walking around. The sand pit is a public site located 4 miles west of the Shoofly Oolites and you could visit the Oolites after the trip if you wanted to go on your own. The IMMG also has an archeologist shaker table that people can use as a group to sift sand for fossils (kids love doing this). \nMEETING LOCATION: We will meet at the Albertsons Parking Lot on Hwy 21 and Federal Way at 9:45 am (near McDonalds). Steve will arrange carpools at this location; the roads are paved except for the last 1.7 miles\, which is a good-quality dirt road suitable for most (but not all) vehicles. We will return to the carpool location at ~3 pm. This is a new trip so even if you have done the Shoofly Oolite trip before\, this new trip offers a different opportunity to find fossils and petrified wood and visit a new geologic site. \nNo dogs please. Bring lunch and beverages and dress for the weather. We will never be more than 500 feet away from the vehicles. \nThis trip and all of our 5-6 different field trips are FREE for museum members and children so please join or renew your membership for 2026. www.idahomuseum.org/membership \nPre-registration required for this event. \nContact: operations@idahomuseum.org with any questions. \nWe seldom cancel in winter\, but if we do\, we need a functioning email from you. The one you used to register on Eventbrite will be used. A full refund is given if the Museum cancels the field trip. \n$20/pp or FREE for members\nIndividual Annual Membership: $25\nFamily Annual Membership: $45 \nREGISTER: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/shoofly-sand-pit-fossils-tickets-1981793618060?utm-campaign=social&utm-content=attendeeshare&utm-medium=discovery&utm-term=listing&utm-source=cp&aff=ebdsshcopyurl\n————————————\nAbout Steve Schaps: Steve has a BS and MS in Geosciences and an MBA in finance. He has previously led numerous group trips to the Oolite Shoals and many to the fascinating Bruneau area. Steve is a member of the IMMG and an informed and motivated guide for interesting geologic sites near Boise. \nThis Geologic Field Trip is sponsored by the Idaho Museum of Mining and Geology\, 2455 Old Penitentiary Rd\, next to the Old Pen in East Boise. \nThis adventure requires a waiver.
